Licensing for E-commerce businesses

E-commerce is typically licensed as a trading + e-services hybrid in UAE free zones. Activity codes vary: IFZA uses 'electronic commerce' as a standalone category; DMCC uses 'general trading + online store'; SRTIP and ANCFZ have 'e-trading' codes. Payment gateway integration is a separate step requiring CBUAE-licensed PSP onboarding.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell on Amazon.ae from a UAE free-zone company?

Yes. Amazon.ae allows free-zone-licensed companies to register as sellers. You need a valid trade licence + VAT registration (5%) once turnover exceeds AED 375,000.

Do I need a Dubai mainland licence to sell to UAE consumers?

No. A free-zone licence is sufficient for online sales delivered via courier (Aramex, DHL, Naqel, etc.). Physical retail storefronts in mainland UAE require a mainland DED licence in addition.

Which payment gateways accept free-zone companies?

Telr, Stripe Connect (UAE), Network International, Magnati, and PayTabs all onboard free-zone e-commerce companies. Each requires the trade licence + bank account + UBO documentation. Onboarding typically takes 2–4 weeks after the bank account opens.

Is VAT registration mandatory for e-commerce?

Mandatory once taxable turnover exceeds AED 375,000 over any 12-month period. Voluntary registration is available above AED 187,500. Below AED 187,500 you cannot register, but you cannot recover input VAT either.
